What was done to fix the problem, and was it the best solution?
When the disaster happened not much was done to fix the problem. The locals removed several hundred tones of dead fish from the river and signs were put up to tell people not to fish or swim in the river as it was polluted.

The Tisza River was the main source of water used by the people. When the water in the Tisza River was 300 times above the acceptable level drinking water was brought to the people in plastic bags.

Many things should have been done by the government and Australian – Romanian company Esmeralda Exploration Limited to fix or prevent the disaster in the beginning.
The company should have disposed of the cyanide properly in a secure waste compound; if they did this the disaster would never have happened.
The government should have taken more action than just fining the company as the company just left with the gold they had mined without providing a solution to the problem.
There are few ways to remove chemicals from water but are all expensive. The Hungarian government didn’t have enough money and decided that the solution was to wait until the cyanide was diluted by the river’s water.
One way to remove chemicals safely from water is using absorbents, floating booms or solid metals that capture the soil so that the waste can be disposed of in SECURE landfills.

In the disaster the Australian – Romanian company should have been more responsible and fixed the problem before the cyanide reached the Tisza River. The government should of got some money and disposed of the cyanide quickly so the people living along the river could have gone back to living normally again.
